||Kazys Varnelis House-Museum (National Museum of Lithuania)
International academic conference “Book People: Personalities, Experiences and Practices,” September 17-18, 2020, Kazys Varnelis House-Museum, Vilnius, Lithuania
The National Museum of Lithuania continues the cycle of conferences dedicated to the Lithuanian collecting tradition. We kindly invite you to submit your paper summaries for the international academic conference “Book People: Personalities, Experiences and Practices,” which will take place in the Kazys Varnelis House-Museum (National Museum of Lithuania) on September 17-18, 2020.
The aim of the conference organised by the National Museum of Lithuania in partnership with the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies of the University of Warsaw and the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is to evaluate the Lithuanian tradition of bibliophilia, to reveal its development and cultural context. Bibliophilic collections and their owners constitute the axis of the 2020 conference. This is directly related with the personality of Kazys Varnelis, whose bibliophilic collection – especially the Lituanistic one – plays an extremely important role in the Lithuanian culture and is inextricably linked with the activities of the museum established by him. The topic of collecting, private collections and, in particular, their publicity is highly relevant for Lithuania today. This applies not only to art but also to book collections – there are several successfully operating bibliophile clubs, private collections keep supplementing the funds of public libraries, the market for rare publications is on the rise, there are more and more public discussions on private libraries of specific individuals reflecting their world outlook.
The sections of the conference are the following:
1. Lithuanian book collections and their fate (case studies);
2. The formation of personal library traditions and bibliophilic publication market in the region;
3. Psychological and intellectual book collecting aspects: collector’s motives, the relationship between knowledge accumulation, storage and dissemination, etc.;
4. The peculiarities of personal library creation and its structure: collector’s thematic choices, the principles of publication selection and presentation, etc.;
5. Personal libraries of today: the aspects of “institutionalisation,” i.e. getting into libraries, museums and etc., possibilities of public access, etc.
