The Sacramentarium from the Tyniec Abbey near Krakow, which today is kept in the National Library of Warsaw, impresses with its splendid design with almost fifty text and picture ornaments as well as rich initial decorations. When it was founded in Cologne in the 11th century, relations between Cologne and Poland were very close: Queen Richeza, from the Cologne-based Ezzonen family, was married to Poland in 1013. Her son Kasimir the Restorer built from 1041 with Cologne and imperial support the destabilized wars reign over his seat in Krakow. The Cologne Sacramentarium in Poland exemplifies these connections.
At the same time, with the group of medieval manuscripts around the Sacramentarium from Tyniec, the Ottonian book illumination of Cologne experienced an artistic reorientation. The volume presents new research findings on the manuscript, its genesis and artistic circle as well as the history of Poland around the middle of the 11th century.
