Old Village of Hollókő and its Surroundings

This small town, located about 100 km from Budapest, was founded in the 13th century, after the Mongol invasion. The castle on Szár Hill was primarily erected to protect the area. Another remarkable landmark is Palóc ethnographic village, consisting of 67 characteristic peasant houses with stepped gable roofs and porches with wooden breast walls decorated with open-work carvings. The name of the town literally means ‘Raven Stone’.
